The other day we had a general discussion (a group of friends) on the topic, where did it all start? The origin of social media and how far it has brought us if we talk about the current society. Different conclusions have knocked up during the discussion, which really prompted me to find out what has really changed in terms of society as an impact of social media. All the facts and figures that I've gathered, I would like to put in front of you.
Think about it, it's nearly 20 years ago, when the average individual was introduced with the term “Internet”. Before that, the internet was restricted to be used up by the big firms, government organizations, academic institutions etc. And prior to this period, only the U.S govt was authorized to use Internet (as the internet was originated back in 1969 when the U.S military used a research network dubbed “Arpanet”). Of late development and the rise of search engines tremendously impacted the social lives of people. The only thing they needed now was, a communication network where they may connect and communicate socially with other people. Further evolution has led to the development of Social media. In the 21st century, we not only have the internet with us, but we have the power of social media integrated with us.
Social Media is comprised of two words - “Media” that signifies a place where publications occur, “Social” which implies a place where people are interacting with each other in order to share images, ideas and opinions.
In simple language, it is a place where people from different backgrounds can socialize with one another, for sharing different ideas, images and videos. This has really caused the community to get together and bind in a “sphere” where they can publish their recent happenings while being in touch with each other.
Social Media has led to a more convenient and economical exchange of information, which gave rise to social media marketing. That's true, the information that took weeks, or even months to spread across the country now takes only a few days. Back then, when the Internet was hardly available to an average individual to the time we are currently living – there is a huge difference in information sharing techniques. Many government institutions that used other resources of information exchange to their primary advantage (newspapers, magazines) will no longer be able to function as they used to be. This is due to the reason that social media has turned up the things quite rapidly and no other resource is as fast and economical as social media itself. In fact, major publications today use social media to accelerate the pace of information sharing.
The increasing popularity of YouTube, Facebook, Linkedln and Twitter came into the limelight and by then, there was no-one who didn't know about these popular platforms. Even those, with a little education were able to use them in order to socialize with other people share similar interests. All these conclusions have demonstrated one thing – the scope of marketing on Social media platforms! By that time, it had become more than just a necessity for businesses to not only advertise their campaigns using the conventional ways, but also introduce their social media platforms so they could share the information more rapidly while being in touch with the people sitting outside. Yes! It has been a revolution coming into the ways people meet and communicate with each other, not only for their personal sake, but also for the businesses looking for a significant growth! So,
